Relative clauses

Relative clauses ගැන බොහෝ දෙනාට දැනගන්න ඕන වුණත් ලේසියෙන් 100% ක් ම නිවැරදිව ඉගෙන ගන්න නම් ලැබෙන්නේ නෑ. අපි අපේ දරුවන්ට මේ ගැන ඉතා පැහැදිලිව අවබෝධ කර දෙනවා. ඒ වෙනුවෙන් වැඩේට බහින්නයි මේ හදන්නේ.

Relative clauses කියන දේ තමයි ඉංග්‍රීසි වල තියෙන ලස්සනම දේ. ඔයත් ඕනම දෙයක් ඉංග්‍රීසි භාෂාවෙන් විස්තරාත්මකව පැහැදිලි කරමින් කියන්න ආස ඇති. ඉතින් අපි ඒ ආසාව ඉෂ්ට කර ගන්නයි හදන්නේ
Relative clauses වර්ග දෙකක් අපි හදුනාගන්නවා.

1. Restrictive (identifying or defining) relative clauses

It reminded him of the house that he used to live in. මෙම වාක්‍ය යේ කලු පැහැයෙන් දක්වා ඇති කොටස. Restrictive (identifying or defining) relative clauses වර්ගයේ එකකි. වාක්‍ය යේ තේරුම වන්නේ ,
එය ඔහුට ඔහු ජීවත්වීමට පුරුදුව සිටි නිවස පිළිබද සිහිපත් කළේය.  යන්නයි

ඉහත වාක්‍ය යේ තද පැහැයෙන් දක්වා ඇති කොටස වන . Restrictive (identifying or defining) relative clause එක ඉවත් කර දැමුව හොත් ඉහත දැක්වූ ලෙසම වාක්‍ය යේ අදහසට බරපතල හානියක් සිදුවේ.

It reminded him of the house.

1. The book that she read was important for her education.
2. The student who sits in the back of the class room asks a lot of questions.
3. The results that I obtained was the best results of the year.
4. The person who hit my father was a crazy man.
5. The journalist whose story I read yesterday has won prizes for her work.
6. A novelist is someone who writes novels.
7. I know the man who is standing there.

Non- restrictive (non-identifying or non- defining) relative clauses

9. He had thousands of books, most of which he had read.
10. Nalaka was carrying his belongings, many of which were broken.

Who, whom, which ආදී පද restrictive relative clauses වල යෙදී තිබෙන විට ඒවා සහිත වාක්‍ය යොදා කථා කිරීමේ දී  පොදුවේ එම පද වෙනුවට that යෙදීම ඇමරිකානු හා බ්‍රිතාන්‍ය ඉංග්‍රීසි දෙවර්ගයේ ම සිදුවන නව ප්‍රවණතාවකි.

The unreal conditionals-යථාර්ථවාදී නොවන කොන්දේසි වැකි

The unreal conditionals express hypothetical conditions that have no possibility to occur in the past, present or future but describe what could/might have occurred supposedly.
යථාර්ථවාදී නොවන කොන්දේසි මගින් අතීත, වර්තමාන හෝ අනාගතයේදී සිදුවිය හැකි උපකල්පිත කොන්දේසි ප්‍රකාශ කරන නමුත් සිදුවිය හැකි යැයි සිතිය හැකි / සිදුවිය හැකි දේ විස්තර කරයි.
Example:
  • If I were rich, I would travel my whole life.
  • මම ධනවත් නම්, මම මගේ මුළු ජීවිතයම සංචාරය කරමි.
  • If I had a car, I could go anywhere.

Structures of Unreal Conditionals: ආකෘතිය.

For Present/Future Conditions
If + subject + simple past tense + subject + would/could/might + verb in base form. . .
subject + would/could/might + verb in base form + if + subject + simple past tense
Example:

  • If I were the president, I would not support war policies.

  • If he were not ill, he could come with us.
  • ඔහු අසනීප නොවන්නේ නම් ඔහුට අප සමඟ පැමිණිය හැකිය.
  • If I could play tomorrow, I would definitely win the match.
  • මට හෙට ක්‍රීඩා කළ හැකි නම්, මම අනිවාර්යයෙන්ම තරගය ජය ගන්නෙමි.

For Past Conditions
